Welcome to FIRP Laboratory

FIRP Lab is an unique facility at the Universidad de Los Andes. We consider ourselves as a supporting facility of the industrial and productive sector, by bringing knowledge to understand phenomena and know-how to solve actual problems.

In the last 37 years, our applied/fundamental research, i. e. our "helpful science", has been translated into know-how for research and development (R&D), into trainning and outreach, and into technical services and consulting (counseling and coaching), at the service of petroleum industries dealing with surfactant applications such as enhanced oil recovery (EOR), remediation of formation damage, drilling fluids, crude oil dehydration, etc … as well as other issues outside the petroleum area.  Our outstanding contribution resulted in more than 300 undergraduate and graduate thesis, and more than 700 publications and communications, with a few chapters and patents. Our clients and partners include PDVSA, INTEVEP, PECHINEY, LAFARGE, COGNIS, Institut Français du Pétrole, SCHLUMBERGER, BAKER - HUGHES DRILLING FLUIDS, PROCTER & GAMBLE, LIPESA, BASF, QUIDECO, ELF-AQUITAINE, ENITECNOLOGIE, CLARIANT, RHODIA, AKZONOBEL, UNILEVER, RESINAS MULTIPLES, OXITENO, WHEATHERFORD, CHAMPION, PLUSPETROL, TOTAL, ECOPETROL, CEPSA, CENOVUS etc., in Venezuela and abroad.

We have been recently concerned in contributing to national problems to be solved in Venezuela, such as the formulation of a new vehicle for Leishmaniasis treatment with our partner Procter & Gamble and the formulation of a wood preservative for the CNTQ (National Center for Chemical Technology).

FIRP Laboratory is the largest association in Latin America of scientists and engineers working on surfactant science, interfacial phenomena, suspensions, emulsions and foams, and one of the well recognized applied research centers worldwide.
